DOG-FRIENDLY CAR REVIEWS – VOLVO V50 (2004-2012)
Overall paw score: 4 out of 5.
Boot area
For an estate vehicle, the Volvo V50 has a decently proportioned (417-litre) boot, which makes it suitable for transporting medium-to-large-size dogs. The car comes with an under-floor compartment too, which is ideal for storing a multitude of doggy accessories. Furthermore, a low boot height ensures that access for most breeds will be simple.
The vehicle is fitted with a scratch-resistant step, which prevents claws causing damage to the rear bumper whenever a pet clambers in and out. The floor of the boot is extremely durable too, and easy to clean.
Ventilation and cooling
The V50 doesn’t feature an opening rear window (other than those found in the rear passenger compartment, of course). However, air vents positioned at the back of the vehicle will help to keep your pet cool during long drives on hot summer days.
Securing your dog
A dog cage can be securely installed in the boot, thanks to the inclusion of four tie-down hoops. It’s also possible to fit one of a number of dog guards. We are more than happy to help you choose the right one, taking into account your budget and the size of your pet. In the meantime, an in-built cargo net is suitable to use as a dog guard.
Positioned below the V50’s heating controls is a button for deactivating the car’s interior sensors. This will allow you to briefly leave your dog unattended, safe in the knowledge that he or she won’t set off the alarm.
